Introduction

Founded in 1977, the Gallatin History Society (“GHS”) is a 501(c)(3) organization that operates the Gallatin History Museum in Bozeman, MT. The Museum, housed in what was once the Gallatin County Jail, opened in 1982. The Board of Directors is the governing body of the GHS, and such, the Board has broad responsibility for promoting the mission, programs, and image of the GHS and Gallatin History Museum. 

Mission: To promote, foster, and preserve the history of Gallatin County and southwest Montana.

Gallatin Historical Society/Gallatin History Museum Nonprofit Board Commitment

As a member of GHS/Gallatin History Museum, I commit to serving a full three-year term, with no conflicts of interest, and with an understanding of the mission of the organization. I also understand and can commit to the following:

  • Being a team member and dedicating the time necessary to become familiar with the purpose, operations, plans, and programs of the GHS/Gallatin History Museum.

  • Approaching all Board issues with an open mind, prepared to make the best decision for the whole organization.

  • Exercising authority as a Board member only when acting in a meeting with the full Board or as a designated Board delegate.

  • Keeping confidential information confidential.

  • Participating in the leadership of GHS/ Gallatin History Museum by supporting the organization’s mission; participating in strategic and long-range planning; and promoting the mission, programs, and image of GHS/Gallatin History Museum in the community in a positive manner.

  • Assisting in securing financial resources for operations by supporting membership recruitment efforts and contributing to annual fundraising and other development activities as may be reasonable and appropriate for my own circumstances.

  • Serving as chair, sub-chair, or member on at least one committee each year, scheduling and attending regular committee meetings, and reporting to the President.

  • Understanding that Board members are strongly encouraged to attend all Board and committee meetings in person, but that occasionally, extenuating circumstances may necessitate attendance via technology.

As part of this commitment, I also expect certain standards will be met by GHS/Gallatin History Museum’s administrative staff. This includes being kept informed of important concerns of operations and having an opportunity for input in all Board meetings.

By signing at the end of this application, I have pledged to meet these commitments.
